Industry 4.0 & Internet of Things

Machine to Machine Interaction, Data Analytics & Machine Learning, Business Data Processing
Content

In the past decade, also industrial machines and factories have slowly but surely been connected to the Internet, to share more and more data on production, products, processes, services, logistics, etc. The overall goal of Smart Industry (https://www.smartindustry.com/) is to ensure that production processes, products and services are flexible and adjustable in real-time by means of this data; collected, communicated and used by any component involved in the production process and the production network.

In this semester on Industry 4.0 & IoT, you will learn how to apply different IT aspects and IT technologies in the context of industry and thus make industry “smart”. Thus you will learn about:

  • Use of Internet of Things, Connected Systems and Infrastructure for deployment of smart sensors, actuators, and network devices for collecting and storing data for monitoring and controlling industrial systems and operations
  • Program and use Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control systems for programming and controlling production machines and connect them with each other
  • Use of Data Analysis, Machine Learning and AI for process optimization and decision support, and by means visualization, interactive dashboarding, simulation or digital twins.
  • Uses of Smart Supply chain and Business Data processing to optimize the flow of goods and products, and for custom production
Activities

At the beginning of the semester you select topics and technologies you want to learn and in which you want to develop yourself further. During this semester you work on

  • individual challenges These challenges are topics related and help you to gain basic knowledge in certain topics and technologies
  • individual projects You apply the knowledge you have gained in the selected topics in a broader research context.
  • industry group project The group industry project in multi-topics where different topics and technologies are integrated together. These are hands-on learning real-world projects developed in collaboration with our industry partners. By working on these projects you gain better understanding on how different Smart Industry relevant technologies come together in real-world industrial environments. In the group you take the role of an expert in the by-you-selected topics and you work together with other students towards a solution of the given problem.

To support your learning and practice, you will have access to a range of resources, including specialized workshops on various relevant technologies, expert sessions, practical exercises, and coaching, as well as field lab equipment.

Inflow & Outflow

Inflow

The domain of Smart industry is very broad and, as suggested by the topics listed above, it is suitable and accessible for all students with any prior knowledge, with completed semester 2. The semester offers possibilities to extend and apply your previous knowledge, or to gain new knowledge and experience on new topics. This is achieved by the given freedom to select your own program within the semester.

Outflow

The semester Industry 4.0 & IoT prepares for:

  • a possible internship in the direction of Smart Industry
  • advanced semester Industry 5.0 and Study program Smart Industry & IoT
  • study programme Robotics
