This new introduction semester will start in September 2026. It is designed to fit in with the Associate Degree job profile Smart Industry Engineer and it is also available as introduction semester for bachelor students who, for example, aim at Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 as their main and advanced semesters. Another good option is to follow up with the (minor) semester Cybersecurity in Industry.
The goal of this semester is to provide you with a strong foundation in smart industry through hands-on experience in information technology and operations technology. You will become familiar with the domain, standards and digitalization within the industry and related areas. You will become familiar with production processes, data and IT techniques. Examples of the semester content are the SCADA process technology and other industry applications, infrastructure and data pipelines. You will be able to connect industrial applications and digitalization to make processes more efficient and sustainable. The semester focuses on the foundation of basic principles of programmable logic controllers, fieldbus protocols, industrial internet of things IIoT and data analysis using feedback and AI.
You are working on a group industry project and various smaller or larger individual projects based on real world cases. More information on the semester set up will be avaible in March 2026.
The semester is a co-production of Fontys ICT and Fontys Technology (former Fontys Engineering) and teachers are coming from both the world of IT as well as the domain of engineering.
The semester is accessible for everyone who passed the start semester. The logical follow up semesters are main Industry 4.0 and (minor) Cybersecurity in Industry.
