In a world where digital and physical realities increasingly blend, the ability to create meaningful immersive experiences has become more important than ever. From museums and healthcare to education and entertainment, organizations are looking for professionals who can design and develop experiences that truly engage people's senses and emotions.
In the Immersive Experiences semester, you'll learn to create impactful experiences at the intersection of technology, design and human perception. You'll work with a diverse toolkit ranging from traditional crafts and physical materials to cutting-edge technologies like VR, AR and spatial computing. This unique combination allows you to develop solutions that feel authentic and meaningful, whether they're powered by high-tech, low-tech or a thoughtful blend of both.
What makes this semester unique is its three-pillar approach:
During this semester, you'll explore how to create powerful experiences through a blend of storytelling, (digital) craftmanship and emotional engagement. Based on your own interest, you'll work with a toolkit that spans both traditional and digital methods. Think of spatial computing, AI, interactive lighting, XR-technologies, photography, lasercutting, 3D-printing, etc. You'll learn how to transform ideas into meaningful experiences, whether through a gesture-controlled installation, a mixed reality experience or a multisensory environment.
The program emphasizes both the visible and hidden aspects of immersive experience design. You'll learn how to:
This unique combination allows you to create experiences that deeply connect with people, whether through high-tech immersive environments, tactile interactive installations or hybrid experiences that bridge multiple realities.
You'll work on real challenges from industry partners, ranging from artistic installations for cultural institutions to therapeutic applications in healthcare or innovative solutions for businesses. Throughout the semester, you can specialize in your area of interest (xr-technology, experience design or user behavior) while learning to collaborate across disciplines.
Depending on your background and interests, you will develop expertise as Immersive Experience Expert. You work on projects for diverse organizations such as museums, healthcare institutions, creative agencies and tech companies. Recent collaborations include Dutch Design Week and Kempenhaeghe, expertise centre for epilepsy.
The field of immersive experiences is rapidly evolving, which gives you opportunities in:
The Immersive Experience semester builds on the knowledge you have already gained in the main semester Media Creation semester. Also if you have a background in front-end development, Industry 4.0, (game) design or user experience, this semester will challenge you to push the boundaries of what's possible in creating experiences that truly matter. You'll be guided by experts from the field and researchers from our lectorates, ensuring you develop both practical skills and theoretical depth.
By the end of the semester, you'll be prepared to take on a leading role in shaping the future of how humans interact with digital experiences, whether in entertainment, education, healthcare or any field where meaningful human experiences matter.
You either do this semester or the minor Digital Experience Design. Not both.
